Top News Entertainment Food Sport CBC News Unhappy at post-game celebrations, Wales coach wants another shot at Canada It appears Canada's 1-0 win over Wales on Tuesday has left Craig Bellamy with a score to settle. In his post-game availability at Swansea.com Stadium, the Welsh coach was unhappy with what he saw as Canadian celebration on and off the field before the final whistle. "I really hate losing, more than I like winning. And there's a big difference in that," Bellamy said after the men's soccer friendly. "And I see them celebrating at the end, I'm like (long pause) 'I hope I see you in a World Cup. I hope I see you again.' But I have to also as well be gracious. Thank (Canada coach) Jesse (Marsch) for shaking his coaches' hands before the final whistle," he added sarcastically. "I have to get used to that. I don't want to get used to it. But yeah, I have to take it on the chin." Marsch, in his post-game news conference, downplayed the incident when asked about it. "I wasn't involved with that, I think it was my staff," he said. "(The Welsh) weren't happy that I think we were kind of slapping five in the 93rd minute. Because they told us three minutes (of added time) but Rob (Jones), my good friend the referee from (my) Premier League days kept the game going for some reason which I don't know (why)." 'I hope I see you in a World Cup. I hope I see you again,' Craig Bellamy says "We have respect for Wales and their coaching staff and we want them to be successful," he added. No. 31 Wales (3-1-1) stands third in its World Cup qualifying group behind No. 8 Belgium (3-0-1) and No. 62 North Macedonia (3-0-2). The group winner secures a World Cup berth while the runner-up moves into a 16-team playoff round with four World Cup spots available. Bellamy took charge of Wales in July 2024. The Cardiff-born forward won 78 Wales caps and captained the side between 2007 and 2010. At club level, he played for Newcastle United, Manchester City, West Ham and Liverpool among other teams before retiring in 2014 as a Cardiff City player.

Top News Entertainment Food Sport CBC News Once again, the Current River Churches Food Cupboard in Thunder Bay, Ont., is on the move. The food bank was forced to relocate from Refreshing Waters Church at the end of August due to a rent increase at the building on Hodder Avenue. It initially secured a new space inside the former Epiphany Lutheran Church at the corner of Dewe Avenue and Arundel Street. However, during the transition, the service learned it could not operate its refrigerators and freezers there. "We need those because we supply milk and eggs and fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, and of course meat on an ongoing basis," said the food cupboard's co-ordinator, June Gaw. So, the team of volunteers was sent back to the drawing board to find an alternative location. "It's very large and it's certainly going to accommodate all of our needs. We are in the process of putting all our shelf units up right now and trucks are moving our supplies, all our food and everything from the other location to this one," Gaw told CBC News on Wednesday. Now, they're setting up shop at the Kiikenomaga Kikenjigewen Employment and Training Services (KKETS) warehouse at 168 Munro St. The new space also has two overhead doors, which means that when the Regional Food Distribution Association (RFDA) truck comes to drop off food, "they'll be able to back right in." Food bank in Thunder Bay's Current River neighbourhood secures new space This food bank in Thunder Bay, Ont., needs a new location — otherwise it may shut down 3rd time's the charm? Thunder Bay, Ont., food bank in Current River area relocates again New space secured at end of August did not allow refrigerators, freezers While it's been a long few weeks of scrambling, Gaw said she's grateful for everyone's support during the period of uncertainty. "We have four men helping us and all the rest are women," she said with a laugh. "I have to give kudos to these women because they worked exceptionally hard hauling these boxes, loading up the trucks at one end and helping at this end." The food cupboard is open every second Saturday. Its first distribution day at its new space is this Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. Come October, it will switch to its winter hours, 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Partners in Thunder Bay, Ont., launch campaign to help meet summer food demands Return of mobile outreach service in Thunder Bay, Ont., speaks to high demand for support Between 90 and 110 people depend on the service, said Gaw. Volunteers always accept donations of fresh and non-perishable food, as well as household items, hygiene supplies and clothing. "We're going into a colder season now and sometimes people just can't afford to buy a winter jacket or boots, even heavy socks, things like that," Gaw said. "We put that out and they're able to shop and take what they need from that — usually about four or five items they can take themselves — and supply what their needs are." Meanwhile, the RFDA is already gearing up for Thanksgiving in October, and is seeking 60 turkey donations by Sept. 28, which will be dispersed through its member agencies' feeding programs. Those who wish to help out are asked to contact the RFDA at 807-622-7440.

The Expos-Jays World Series matchup that was not to be in 1987 (or ever) In September of 1987, it seemed Canada could see 2 teams headed to the MLB post-season The Montreal Expos were getting hot at the right time, which was firing up the team's fanbase. "Montreal fans are getting pennant fever," Midday's Valerie Pringle told viewers on Sept. 10, 1987, a time when the team sat just two games out of first place. "Now fans need a program this year to tell some of the players [apart], there's so many new ones — but they're getting used to being serious pennant contenders." As Pringle explained, the team's manager, Buck Rodgers, was getting a lot of credit for the team's performance — and he made time to talk to Midday about the wild ride the ever-improving Expos were on. Top News Entertainment Food Sport CBC News An all-Canadian World Series... Buck Rodgers told the CBC's Bill Good that the Montreal Expos had simply seen a steady rise in the team's fortunes during the 1987 MLB season. (Midday/CBC Archives) Of course, there was another Canadian baseball club doing very well at that time — that would be the Toronto Blue Jays — and that set up the possibility of a very interesting post-season. "We'd like to see Toronto and Montreal go head-to-head in the World Series," said Rodgers, when considering the scenario. He noted that such a matchup could help raise the profile of the game of baseball in a country where hockey tended to command greater attention. "We know that hockey is the number 1 sport in Canada, but we feel that something like a World Series between Toronto and Montreal would really put baseball on the map and get people talking," said Rodgers. "We don't expect to replace hockey, we just want to be right there close behind it." In this March 22, 1990 photo, Montreal Expos manager Buck Rodgers (left) is seen chatting with team owner Charles Bronfman (right) during spring training in West Palm Beach, Fla. (Ryan Remiorz/Canadian Press) Alas, the Expos would finish the season with a 91-71 record, which put them in third place. They missed the playoffs, which meant any dream of meeting the Blue Jays in the finals was dead — and besides, Toronto went 0-7 to end the season and missed out on the post-season as well . The Blue Jays would get to the World Series eventually, winning back-to-back championship titles in 1992 and 1993 . But the Expos never got there, though there will always be what-if questions about their 1994 season, which was abruptly ended by a strike .
